Surely shome mishtake

Posted by 1troy3 on April 28, 2008

I couldn’t find any of us on the Sunday Times rich list – tell me there was a page missing.

Back in the Shire this weekend. Looking forward to it.

Large ones all round

Posted by 1troy3 on April 26, 2008

The cabinet has been unlocked and the sherry bottle liberated for the second time in three seasons.
Must admit, I didn’t think we’d be celebrating with a game to spare. Well done United!

And I saw a swift today – icing on the cake.

Confident of victory

Posted by 1troy3 on April 21, 2008

Just spent the best part of three days researching the names of Royal Navy ships – simply because I need it for one word. Not that I’m complaining. I really learned a lot.

For example, I never knew that there were more than 800 blokes aboard the Victory at Trafalgar and that every single marine on that ship (nearly 150 of them) was blown to smithereens. The Victory got off quite lightly. Eighty per cent of one ship’s company was wiped out. I also found out that Nelson wanted to say ‘England confides that every man will do his duty’ but the word confides (meaning ‘is confident’) wasn’t in the flag book, it had to be spelled out, so for the sake of expediency a very brave man indeed suggested an alternative to his lordship.

And I didn’t know that some earlier naval boats had the prefix HM Bark – Capt Cook’s Endeavour being one of them. There’s another thing. He was actually a liuetenant, but was correctly referred to as captain when he was in charge of the ship. Phew, a banana skin at every turn.

Anyway, I reckon we need all nine points from the last three games to get automatic promotion so someone needs to start scoring goals…so come on! Just so as you can place your bets with the smart money I’m also hoping Chelsea nick the title, Liverpool win the Champions League, Everton hang on to fifth place and Reading stay up.

Guess what…

Posted by 1troy3 on April 17, 2008

Aaaaah, you were all on the right track. The simple dalliances of an idle mind eh? So…

Oi, you looking at my Byrds?

Oi, you looking at my board?

…and so on

If you can’t beat ‘em…

Posted by 1troy3 on April 15, 2008

Oi you lookin’ at my bird!

Also saw a swallow today which really cheered me up.

Thanks for the caption ideas – tricky one I agree. I’ll see if I can find an easier one.

….and a point at the Dons – that’ll do.

Your turn

Posted by 1troy3 on April 10, 2008

The modern quote for this one is rubbish so I thought you might have some better ideas. Fire away.

Enjoyed a couple of fabulous walks in Herefordshire – one with Ian and one with Matt. As both of them said, the county has just such an amazing variety of landscapes and wildlife. For those of you who are interested, some of the nature highlights included the cuckoo flower (aka lady’s smock), white violets, yellow archangel, a pair of mandarin ducks, and an unconfirmed peregrine sighting. However, fewer jackdaws than previously noted – especially around Sutton. Wonder what it is?

I’m afraid I won’t be able to make And’s premiere but looking forward to some more walks soon, and hopefully fit in a game at Edgar Street before the end of the season.

oh yeah… got a new job.

Blarney banter

Posted by 1troy3 on April 4, 2008

As you know, I’m something of a fan of Irish culture so I thought I would share a few proverbs I came across from the emerald isle.

That woman has a tongue that would clip a hedge.

You can accomplish more with a kind word and shillelagh than you can with just a kind word.

and

Is buaine port ná glór na n-éan,
Is buaine focal ná toice an tsaoil.

In Hereford for a few days.
