Lump in the throat

A theme I keep coming back to is our perception of the passage of time. And you may want to skip this because it’s all a bit filosofikal.
I dropped in to see my old colleagues. They’ve moved to a swanky newsroom, changed roles and entered a brave new world. It was very strange seeing them out of my familiar context. And then I went up to the old newsroom where I spent 10 years of my life, at all times of the day and night, summer and winter, witnessing historic moments as they unfolded, and through all the moods of triumph and despair. It was the same room but the atmosphere had gone.
It’s nearly two years since I left but feels like the blink of an eye. It’s also clear there has been huge changes in that time.
Then co-incidentally, an old buddy from the early days of internet journalism got in touch this evening and the years rolled away. We got talking about the next generation – the people I see going in right at the beginning of their careers, completely the other end to me.
I felt like I lost the anchor today.
Ever had days like that? Would love to hear your take on it.

It’s a bit different at Edgar St. – with the ground being the same as it was 35 years ago,I feel time standing still watching United – especially night matches which always provide a better atmosphere. An image of Steve Ritchie scoring a 30 yard screamer against Mansfield crossed my mind last night (remember that one Ian?) as we beat Leeds with ease. One thing changed for the worse – the only chants the Meadow End came up with littered with obscenities – oh for some original witty ditties. By the way – Leeds were awful – from Euro semi-finalists 8 years ago to third tier fodder. Man.City pay close attention.

Yeah, I wondered how much Leeds would fancy it – travelling all that way to Edgar Street on a Tuesday night in February. But well done to the lads.
And you’re right about going through a trap door Al – Oxford United and Sheffield Wednesday are two more who spring to mind.
I’m really hoping we stay up but it looks like a big ask. With back-to-back wins though, maybe we can cling on to an unbeaten run for a couple more games. Even a nil-nil away at the big boys would do us a power of good (if our fellow strugglers would stop winning away from home that is).
Hoping to be home around weekend of 7 March.

There’s always one isn’t there. However, Michael Tim has now been liquidated.
Will update the site when I manage to draw breath – been a bit swamped with work again.
Hope all is well with everyone. I have a family do next Saturday so I’m hoping to get out and see ye Hereford dwellers.

Wish you were here (instead of me).

Know the feeling mate.
But me and you have been there before – remember the dark days at the Mail when we were in the trenches together? I don’t think any of us have much of an option but to hang on in there and tough it out.
Come and do a bit of teechin. It’s not a fortune but presents another option – and I desperately need some CSS coding advice on our site. I’ve ground my teeth so much over it I’ve bust a tooth (no, seriously, I have).
